From the end of 2021, Ruter’s ferries in the Oslofjord will be operated by Boreal Sea, with five new electric vessels, designed by Multi Maritime.

In 2019 Ruter, the company responsible for public transportation in Oslo, announced the prestigious competition “Boat services Indre Oslofjord 2021”, with demands for electric vessels. This is a step on the road towards emission-free public transport in Norways capital within 2028 – a goal the island boats will reach in 2022 when all the new ferries are operational. Boreal Sea won the bid, with boats designed by Multi Maritime. The deciding factor is based on the price, quality and charging infrastructure. The boats are universally designed, with a higher passenger capacity than today.

Ruter’s CEO Bernt Reitan Jenssen said in connection with the winner’s announcement that the real winners were the customers, adding:
“It’s going to be amazing to enjoy the view on board, while the boats are sailing quietly, without emissions to the islands.”

Inner Oslofjord – a great showcase for Multi Maritime

It’s also a great showcase for Multi Martime, since Oslo is investing heavily in green technology. The Norwegian capital was named the European Green Capital in 2019.

– For us, this is a prestige project to win, since design and quality was a large part of the award criteria. Norway is on the forefront in electrification, and this contract confirms Multi Maritime’s position as the leading company in our field, says Multi Maritime’s CEO Mikael Johansen.

The batteries are recharged via pantograph chargers on a universally designed floating dock, able to charge two vessels at the same time.
– We have designed a charging solution with a smaller footprint than existing solutions, while also being more user friendly, says Johansen.
The vessels also have the potential for autonomous operation in the future.
